Blue Bird South Co.

Blue Bird has a long history of manufacturing school buses. In the early 1960s, the company launched its first assembly line outside of North America. In 1965, it opened a manufacturing plant in Guatemala to build the bodies for Blue Bird buses. This helped lower costs, both in production and maintenance, as it used local chassis.

The company’s headquarters remain in Fort Valley, GA. Founded in 1922, Blue Bird’s first bus, known as the Blue Bird, was built by the company. Since then, it has expanded to several states and operates as a subsidiary of Blue Bird Corporation. Although the company has expanded, its headquarters are located in Fort Valley, Georgia.

Blue Bird began as a side project in the Ford dealership of Albert Luce Sr. The company employs over 2,000 people, and its main manufacturing facility remains a local landmark. While Blue Bird was able to compete with modern motor coaches, it had mixed results in other segments. The City Bird was discontinued after ten years of disappointing sales, but the Wanderlodge remained one of the company’s most popular recreational vehicles. It accounted for one out of every five Blue Bird vehicles sold. Blue Bird also expanded its vision to the motor coach industry with the Wanderlodge motor coach. It was built on the same chassis as the All American school bus.
